EDC Key Jingle Solution

John / December 11, 2017

I carry keys on a carabiner hooked to my belt loop.  It’s handy because my job often has me carrying equipment in and out of doors.  I’ve found when carrying items, it’s much easier to access my keys from the belt loop versus inside my pockets.  The problem is, it results in a heavy “jingle” factor.  To combat this, I super-glued small magnets from Amazon to each side of my keys.  The keys no longer jingle, and take up less space than alternatives like rubber key covers.

Skype for Business – Windows 10 – Enable “Appear Offline”

John / October 10, 2017

There are a lot of old search results for enabling “Appear Offline” in Lync or Skype for Business 2016.  However, the registry key was missing in my install of Windows 10, so I had to create it to gain access to the feature. The key should be located here: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync] “EnableAppearOffline”=dword:00000001 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Office > 16.0 > Lync If you don’t see those keys, create them as listed here.  Then create a DWORD 32bit and name it EnableAppearOffline.  Once created, edit the DWORD and change the value to 1. Restart Skype for Business and…

Eat your Tweeties (part 4)

John / May 12, 2017

I’m leaving twitter but wanted to preserve some of my tweets from over the years.  This is part 4 (AND HOPEFULLY FINAL) Annie want some gnocchi? Want some gnocchi, Annie? So amazing that after all these years scientists still haven’t figured out how the pilgrims built the pyramids! #pilgrims Is there still a place for the question mark in modern writing I basically stopped caring when I found out “The Force” wasn’t real. I use humor to hide the pain I feel inside… j/k I feel nothing. The state’s name is from the Choctaw words “okla” and “humma,” meaning “red…

Eat your Tweeties (part 3)

John / May 12, 2017

I’m leaving twitter but wanted to preserve some of my tweets from over the years.  This is part 3. Officially changing my status for the next several months… Fleece Mode: Engaged Beards are kind of like “The Force,” if you’re not born with the shit already, then you’re never going to be a fucking Jedi. I get that you’re all about that bass but treble got us here and I think it’s earned a little recognition. Cookie Crisp and me ’bout to rumble After all these years, I’ve yet to receive a single cookie from the Internet… what gives? Cleaning…

Eat your Tweeties (part 2)

John / May 4, 2017

I’m leaving twitter but wanted to preserve some of my tweets from over the years.  This is part 2.   Seriously just had a van pull up to me on the road and ask if I want some candy… then held a bag of candy out the window. I wish Help Desk support tiers had colored belts like Karate. Do birds really say “tweet tweet tweet” because I’m starting to think they’re saying “skeet skeet skeet” Is it safe to use my qi charging pad as a drink coaster? I used to work with a guy who brought donuts in…

Eat your Tweeties (part 1)

John / May 3, 2017

I’m leaving twitter but wanted to preserve some of my tweets from over the years.  This is part 1. Whenever the TV has a signal issue, I wait a few seconds expecting The #Joker to appear and announce he will drop a million bucks on #Tulsa I like to think my twitter obscurity is not a reflection of me, but of the 3 disappointments I call followers. #weneedtotalkaboutyourflare Fat guy photo tip: Be familiar with your face and always photograph with your good chin forward Goatees and fat I.T. guys go together like cookies and milk I’d rather inhale 2nd…

Auto Mount ISO at boot for any user

John / April 27, 2017

We have a legacy app that plays videos off a CD.  The app will not launch if the disc is not available.  I created an ISO file from the disc but needed a way to auto mount the disc during logon so any user who signed into the PC could use the application. I finally came up with an easy solution and am documenting here.  Feel free to use and customize to fit your needs.  You need admin rights to complete these steps.  Also, I have only tested this on Windows 8.1. Step 1: Create a new folder, mine is…
